H.O.R.S. is a student association. To become a member, you must be enrolled at an educational institution and be at least 18 years old. You do not have to study in Amsterdam, and you do not have to attend the University of Amsterdam. Students from universities, universities of applied sciences and MBO programmes are welcome.

International students are absolutely welcome. You do not need to be Dutch to join H.O.R.S.

There is no initiation period or compulsory introduction period. You can join at any point during the academic year.

Please note: H.O.R.S. is a student association, not a general riding school. If you are not a student or are under 18, please contact the Hollandsche Manege directly.

The annual membership fee for a rider is €50. This gives you access to the riding lessons, outside rides and other activities organised by H.O.R.S. You only pay for riding lessons when you actually attend them.

If you would like to stay involved with H.O.R.S. without taking riding lessons, you can become a social member for €12,50 per year.

Social members can attend drinks, social activities and other association events, but cannot participate in riding lessons.

There is no initiation period and you can become a member at any point during the academic year.

Riding lessons take place every Friday evening at the Hollandsche Manege. Our regular programme consists of a half-advanced dressage lesson, an advanced dressage lesson and a jumping lesson.

You do not have to ride every week. Each week, members receive an email with the available lessons for the upcoming Friday. You can sign up by replying to this email and paying the corresponding lesson fee.

Dressage riders are expected to arrive approximately 30 minutes before their lesson. For jumping lessons, please arrive 45 minutes beforehand. This gives you enough time to prepare and care for your horse and, when necessary, help set up the jumping course.

Lesson prices exclude any applicable administration fees.

It is possible to take both a dressage and a jumping lesson on the same evening.

Do you have some experience with riding and are curious about H.O.R.S.? You can join us for a trial lesson without any obligation to become a member.

During the trial lesson, you will get to know the association, our lessons and the atmosphere at the riding school. Afterwards, you can decide whether you would like to become a member.

Never ridden before? You can also join H.O.R.S.! We organise several beginners’ courses throughout the year for students with little or no riding experience.

A beginners’ course consists of five one-hour lessons on Friday evenings. You will learn the basics of riding and horse care, including how to groom, saddle and handle a horse. During the course, you will learn the three basic gaits: walk, trot and canter.

After completing the course, you can decide whether you would like to become a member of H.O.R.S.

Please note that beginners’ courses are not offered throughout the entire year and there may be a waiting list.

If you do not want to wait for the next beginners’ course, you can also take lessons directly at the Hollandsche Manege and join H.O.R.S. once you have reached an intermediate riding level.

H.O.R.S. is about more than riding. Every Friday after the lessons, you are invited for social drinks in the beautiful foyer of the Hollandsche Manege. Throughout the year, we organise a wide range of activities for our members.

We regularly organise outside rides through forests or along the beach, special lessons such as western riding, cross-country training and side-saddle lessons, as well as dressage and jumping competitions.

Every year we also organise a H.O.R.S. weekend away.
